The Science Behind Pixar Exhibit Celebrates The Essence of Movie Magic

The week before school started, the girls and I visited the Museum of Science and Industry to attend The Science Behind Pixar exhibit.  We’re huge movie fans and Pixar movie fans, in particular.  As you can see from the photos below, before the girls even entered the exhibit, their excitement was palpable!

Setting up the movie magic with inspiring quotes right before entering the exhibit:

Quote about creativity by Pixar Animation Studios' president.
“Creativity is about solving problems.” -Ed Catmull, President Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios and Disneytoon Studio

Quote by Pixar Director of Photography.
There’s this moment where all of the code and math suddenly comes to life. -Danielle Feinberg, Director of Photography: Lighting

Starting the Science Behind Pixar with “Toy Story”:

Building your own robot like “Wall-E”:

Controlling the speed of each frame from a scene in “The Incredibles”:

Scenes from "The Incredibles" at the speed of your choosing.
Gigi loved watching the facial expressions shift from frame to frame based on how fast or slowly she turned the wheel.

There were great lighting lessons based on “Finding Nemo” and “Up”:

The lessons were abundant and for all learning styles.

There were so many opportunities for independent reading, watching videos and hands-on learning that every child would find something fascinating here.  It’s a delightful experience for kids and parents alike!

And on the way out, you can become your very own action figure:

The Science Behind Pixar is open until January 6th, 2019 at the Museum of Science and Industry.  For more information you can check out the museum’s website here: https://www.msichicago.org/
